It all started with a childhood fascination with butterflies. Mario Raviglione, from Miagliano in the Italian Alps, had no family medical background but loved nature from an early age. In his teen years, he had to choose between his loves of science, art, and music for his future career. But in the end, a medical degree at Turin University was his chosen path.During medical training, endocrinology piqued his interest, but a career in this specialty in Italy was not to be. "You needed to have some special connection or contact in the school of endocrinology, which I did not have", Raviglione recalls. "The other option was to work for free for 2 or 3 years first, which I did not want, so I began thinking about the US."
