Antidepressant-suicide link in children questioned

New research suggesting that anti-depressants do not increase suicidal thoughts and behaviour in children and adolescents is raising questions over the black box warnings placed on the drugs' packaging as ordered by US regulators since 2004. Scientists in Chicago failed to find evidence that fluoxetine, marketed as Prozac or Sarafem, increased the risk for suicide in youths. In adults, fluoxetine and venlafaxine, sold as Effexor, was found to decrease suicidal thoughts and behaviour as well as depressive symptoms.
