Osteoblastoma as the Cause of Persistent Lumbosacral Pain in a Female High School Athlete

Although low back pain in an adolescent female athlete is not uncommon, persistent pain refractory to standard treatment algorithms must raise clinical suspicion and prompt the physician to again broaden the differential diagnosis to less common etiologies. Specifically, red flags such as night pain and constitutional symptoms must be noted. We present the case of a benign neoplasm, specifically osteoblastoma, as the cause of persistent back pain in a female high school athlete. Although of low malignant potential, surgical resection of primary spinal neoplasms must be considered if there are progressive neurologic deficits or a functional decline in sports performance or activities of daily living.
