Merck bids ￡1.6bn for crystals firm

GERMANY'S Merck is to buy hi-tech materials firm AZ Electronic Materials for ￡1.6bn (US$2.5bn) in cash, as it looks to extend into specialty chemicals. The UK-based AZ is the world's largest producer of liquid crystals used in TVs and smartphone screens, and supplies Apple with the chemicals used in the iPad. Merck's bid has been endorsed by the company's board.
