Diageo takes a ￡1.3bn stake in United Spirits

UK-BASED drinks giant Diageo has offered to buy a controlling stake in United Spirits (USL), India's largest spirits group and one of the largest in the world, for E1.3bn(US$2.05bn). USL is part of the United Breweries Group, and its brands include Whyte and MacKay and Jura whiskies, Vladivar vodka and McDowell's Celebration Rum. Diageo has initially bought a 27.4% stake in the company for ￡660m, and will launch a tender offer for a further 26% of the company owned by public shareholders.
