Wastelands have recently been in newsfor a variety of reasons. When the Govern-ment of Tamil Nadu recently embarkedupon an initiative to distribute 2.5 acresof land to the landless, the feasibility of'sourcing land' was keenly discussed.Similar apprehensions were raised whenestablishment of satellite towns aroundcities like Chennai was mooted. To allaythe fears, the Government declared thatonly wastelands and drylands would beacquired for the purpose. It was alsomentioned that water resources, dwellingareas and forests would not be broughtunder the purview of this programme.
