Photoredox-catalyzed radical cascade trifluoroethylation-cyclization of cis and trans vinyl isocyanides with trifluoroethyl iodide involving an unusual single-electron transfer and energy transfer processes of photocatalyst provides an atom economical method for the synthesis of 1-trifluoroethylated isoquinolines.
