Marubeni and JERA Withdraw from Australian LNG Import Project

Japan’s Marubeni Corporation and JERA have withdrawn from the LNG import terminal project in New South Wales, eastern Australia. The two companies have sold all their stakes of 30.1% (Marubeni) and 19.9% (JERA) in the project company Australian Industrial Energy (AIE) to Australia’s Squadron Energy. AIE aims to meet 70% of gas demand in the NSW state by the latter half of 2022 under a 100% owner Squadron Energy. The news came as an announcement released on 20th by AIE. Squadron Energy, owned by one of the richest billionaires in Australia Andrew Forrest, is confident in realizing the project by itself, according to a person familiar with the matter.
