China has overtaken Japan and become No. 1 natural gas importer in the world. According to the country’s trade statistics, its total pipeline gas and LNG imports (natural gas imports) reached 90.385 million mt in 2018, up by 31.9% from the previous year. To meet strong demand for natural gas triggered by fuel shift from coal etc., the country has been significantly increasing procurement volume, which has hit a record high.
