Molecular mapping of gene-rich chromosome-specific sequences - a complementary approach to plant genome initiative in India

A systematic programme of molecular mapping of gene-rich segments of plants of economic value is discussed with reference to the occurrence of gene synteny (parallelism of gene order). The implication is that the isolation and study of genes from one plant can provide information and sequences that can be used in the improvement of other economic species. The development of chromosome-specific libraries and the preferential mapping of gene-rich regions are discussed.
