摘要

The validity of the concept of the anatomically shaped cohesive silicone gel implant for controlling breast shape in aesthetic and reconstructive breast surgery has been questioned by many surgeons for several reasons. First, round implants provide excellent results for many patients, leading some to question the need for an anatomical implant at all. Also, many surgeons had a less than favorable experience with the early shaped saline implants of the mid 1990s where, rather than providing control of the upper pole, upper pole distortion of the breast was noted instead. When this experience is coupled with the increased cost of these devices, and the fact that many surgeons do not have access to them because of restrictive U.S. Food and Drug Administration trials, it is easy to understand why many surgeons remain skeptical as to their utility. With this in mind, this article by Weum et al. provides some interesting insights into the clinical use of these implants.
