Illinois orders Vistra to shut 25% of state’s coal fleet

In a move that provided partial satisfaction for green groups, Illinois regulators have issued an order lowering emissions caps for coal-fired power plants and directing Vistra Energy to close 2,000 megawatts of coal generation — about one-fourth of its power plant fleet in the state — by the end of this year. In a June 20 order, the Illinois Pollution Control Board tightened the state’s Multi-Pollutant Standard by setting stricter, mass-based caps for sulfur dioxides and nitrogen oxides emitted by Vistra’s eight coal plants in the state, which total about 7,661 megawatts.
