The nation’s Class I railroads’ coal carloads in the week ending March 9 fell 8.6%, or by 7,238 carloads, from the year-ago week, according to the Association of American Railroads. Meanwhile, sources report that U.S. utilities continue to take deliveries to build up summer stockpiles, and the seasonal round of RFPs appears to have begun, with both American Electric Power and Southern Company entering the market this week for supplies to fill out 2019 and for two years forward, in the case of AEP.
