Vietnam’s rising prominence in the thermal coal imports space is presenting opportunities for niche products, such as higher c.v. material from Indonesia and anthracite from South Africa. Various producers from both countries outlined their ambitions for doing business into Vietnam in the months ahead as they spoke with IHS Markit in Ho Chi Minh City this week. Indonesian miner Medco Energi - with concessions in North Kalimantan that produce 6,500 kc GAR coal with 3.5% sulfur - sees its prospects in Vietnam improving.
