Duke answers critics on possible early coal retirements

Duke Energy Carolinas and Duke Energy Progress told the North Carolina Utilities Commission on Monday that they will look at the impacts of accelerated retirements of their coal-fired power plants. The two utilities last September filed their separate 2018 integrated resource plans with the commission. Their joint comments filed Monday were in response to criticisms of various parts of the IRPs by the commission staff, the state attorney general, the Environmental Defense Fund and North Carolina Sustainable Energy Association. The comments also responded to the joint comments of the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, the Natural Resources Defense Council and Sierra Club, plus environmental group NC WARN.
