PGE and Idaho Power readying to retire Boardman plant

Portland General Electric and Idaho Power are working through various venues to ready for the retirement by the end of this year of the coal-fired Boardman power plant in Oregon. The 585-MW plant burns low-sulfur, subbituminous coal and began commercial generation in 1980. Portland General co-owns the plant with Idaho Power and operates the plant. The plant is subject to a longstanding agreement with regulators to be retired for clean-air reasons. Portland General has indicated that a possible switch of the plant to burn biomass is not viable.
