The basic cell cycle machinery is highly conserved in eucaryotes, Its central engine, the cyclin-dependent protein kinases (CDKs) and their associated cyclins, as well as a large number of turnover, upstream and downstream components also operate in plants. Despite their high evolutionary conservation, these components seem to assemble by a plant-specific combinatorial code, and the plant cell cycle machinery is steered by plant-specific forces. The mitogenactivated protein kinases (MAPKs), another class of highly conserved protein kinases, play a prominent role in turning on the central engine. In this review the roles of the two families of protein kinases in plant cell cycle regulation are linked to their role in growth, hormone action and the dynamics of the cytoskeleton.
