Companies must show a profit to survive. But medicines should essentially cure people, which would automatically decrease the sale of drugs, thereby decreasing the profits of the drug companies. How does one resolve this contradiction? Currently, manycompanies are pursuing the profit motive first, with health care asa second priority. We list two dozen reasons that could underlie an increase in the revenue for a drug company.About half of them are ethical reasons, and the other half unethical. We discuss some of these reasonswith examples. A change in the drug discovery paradigm may be warranted to resolve this contradiction.
