We have recently heard the announcement by our Prime Minister on the imminent ban of six types of single-use plastics. These would include items like plastic bags, cups, plates, small bottles, straws and certain types of sachets. This is also being accompanied by the adoption of bio-degradable plastics, embracing of recycling and reuse practices, along with evaluation of alternate materials and technologies. While these ideas and steps have been mooted and discussed long ago,the primary difference is this announcement coming in from the highest authority in the country, with a fixed starting date for its possible implementation(2nd October)and a declaration of support for the same by leading consumers from the public and private sector undertakings like the Railways and some leading Airlines, besides Hotel chains and also new age start-ups.We are also seeing an emerging shift in this direction globally not only amongst the developed countries and economies, but also countries like China, which are looking at new options for packaging.
