Turkish cement plant buys coal cargo, tender concluded in Morocco

Demand in the Turkish thermal coal market remained largely subdued in the week to Friday with lower European thermal coal prices adding bearish pressure to the market. A cement plant in Turkey was heard to have purchased a Panamax cargo Thursday at $76/mt, which traders believed to be of Russian origin. A Mediterranean trader said he heard the seller of the coal was a prominent Russian trader that had a cheap cargo that needed to be shifted. The depressed benchmark CIF ARA 6,000 kcal/kg NAR market has eaten into the competitiveness of petcoke for the cement market, which could have encouraged the recent coal deal.
