Singapore—Russian thermal coal gained traction in the Asian thermal coal market Thursday as Chinese buyers switched from domestic material to cheaper alternatives, while more high-ash Australian miners were said to have sold out of January shipments, market sources said. Chinese domestic coal prices have been rangebound for about a month and a recent hike in domestic freight rates from north to south China has encouraged seaborne trading activities, a Shanghai-based trader said.
