London—Atlantic thermal coal prices rose on Friday after what had been a largely negative week, although that outlook was far from bullish as the winter demand season approaches with little upside given to current price levels. In Europe, CIF ARA prices fell throughout the week before rebounding slightly on Friday, but were ultimately lower on a week-ago basis. S&P Global Platts CIF ARA 6,000 kcal/kg NAR price was assessed at $55.05/mt, up $1.05 on the day and down $1.85 on the week. “It has been very quiet with non-existent European demand for fresh volumes and the arbitrage into the Pacific closed,” a European coal analyst said.
