Houston—US thermal coal exports are expected to decline 25% next year amid a weak export environment as European-delivered prices remain low, Seaport Global analysts wrote Monday. “Most producers need at least $70/mt-$75/mt [index-linked CIF ARA] price before exporting thermal coal makes sense,” Seaport said. “Some can make the math work at lower [index] prices based on their cost structure and logistics’ situation, but as a general rule, prices below $75/ mt just aren’t that exciting or profitable for most US coal producers.”
