Kyiv—Ukraine will have a record amount of coal stored in warehouses by the end of the high-demand season due to unusually warm weather, Energy Minister Oleksiy Orzhel said over the weekend. Ukraine will probably have 3 million mt of coal when the season ends on April 15, up from about 1.7 million mt the previous year, and this may trigger massive losses for power plants, Orzhel said. “This is a financial loss,” Orzhel said. “We are working on a complex plan that would help us find an exit from this situation.” The record stock of coal also poses a major fire hazard at warehouses keeping the record amount of coal that hasn’t been used during the winter, Orzhel said, adding that the plan would also address the problem.
