Singapore—Indonesia’s thermal coal exports fell 31% year on year to a 27-month low of 21.1 million mt in May, and were down 8% from April, latest customs data showed. Sub-bituminous coal accounted for 87.5% of the total, or 18.5 million mt, and bituminous coal the balance. Indonesia’s exports to China fell 27% on the year to 5.2 million mt in May, and were down 2% on the month. However, China remained ahead of India as Indonesia’s biggest customer in May, largely due to India’s nationwide lockdown to combat the coronavirus pandemic in the month reducing its requirements.
