Farming strategies for a variable climate - a challenge.

摘要

This paper develops an approach for identifying appropriate strategies for rainfed regions based primarily on information and prediction of climate variability. The methodology developed is generally applicable. However, the paper focuses on the specific case of production of rainfed groundnut in the Anantapur region, a semi-arid part of India. Firstly, the farmers' perspective and farming strategies are elucidated. The essential tools/knowledge for developing a decision support system are then briefly discussed. Next, the approach is illustrated by considering one specific problem, viz. the identification of optimum sowing window for TMV-2 variety of groundnut in the Anantapur region.
