The suitability of a wide variety of genetic markers for testing somaclonal variation during micropropagation, storage and conservation is discussed. It is concluded that, unless a particular molecular marker has been proven to be suitable for DNA fingerprinting, it should only be used to determine genetic variation and not for genetic fidelity studies.
