Equinor hits oil at Sputnik prospect in Norway’s Barents Sea

London-Norway’s Equinor has made a light oil discovery at the Sputnik prospect in the Barents Sea that could hold 20 million- 65 million barrels of recoverable oil, the state-controlled company said Tuesday. The well was the fourth of five exploration wells Equinor plans to complete in the Barents Sea this year, and the first to yield a potentially commercial discovery. It lies far further north than any current Norwegian production, 350 kilometers from Hammerfest on Norway’s northern coast, and is 30 kilometers north of the 440 million barrel Wisting discovery.
