C. annuum (cv. California Wonder) seeds were treated with various chemical priming agents, i.e. calcium chloride (50 mM), hydrogen peroxide (1.5 mM), potassium nitrate (300 mM), abscisic acid (ABA; 100 micro M), polyethylene glycol (PEG 6000; 16.7 mM), thiourea (1.3 mM), sodium chloride (50 mM) and copper sulfate (5 mM), for 24 h. Primed seeds, in general, exhibited faster germination and better seedling establishment, as well as tolerance of subsequent exposure to cold (4 degrees C) stress, than the control. Plants obtained from chemically primed seeds were grown inside a partially controlled (27+or-2 degrees C and 50% relative humidity) greenhouse. The seeds in fruits harvested from plants grown from seeds primed with potassium nitrate, hydrogen peroxide, ABA and calcium chloride exhibited viviparous germination; fruits harvested from the plant grown from the control (non-primed) seeds, hydro-primed seeds, or seeds primed with other chemicals did not show vivipary. Seeds at several stages of germination (tiny embryos emerging from the seed coat to young seedlings with small cotyledons, elongated hypocotyls and radicals) were observed in mature fruits while they were still attached to the mother plant.
