Regional anaesthesia techniques provide beneficial analgesia in surgical and obstetric patients

The toxicity of amide-linked local anaesthetics is roughly in a relationship to their nerve blocking strength, i.e., among the presently used, bupivacaine is the most toxic one. Therefore, as pointed out by Veering (pp. 455-459), in the recent years much research and publicity effort has been given to the very close molecular 'relatives', S( - )-ropivacaine and S(- )-bupi-vacaine (levobupivacaine), which have less systemic toxicity than racemic bupivacaine. The fact remains that these newer agents do not significantly differ, or differ very little from racemic bupivacaine in their clinical properties.
