Needle coke shortage to hit China’s graphite electrode output

Chinese graphite electrode productionis poised to grow to meet increasingdomestic demand, although additionalcapacity installed will not likely be fully utilizeddue to a shortage of the raw material needle coke, an official at the China CarbonIndustry Association said Wednesday.Since 2017, an additional 600,000 mt/year of new graphite electrode capacity hasbeen injected into the Chinese market,comprising plants that have come onstream, those under construction and thosebeing planned, Sun Qing, secretary generalof the association told a conference inHangzhou. When the new capacity comes onstream by the end of 2020, China’s totalcapacity will reach 1.5 million mt/year.
