North American demand for high-strength aluminum for car bumpers to double from 2015 to 2025: Kobe Steel

The number of car bumpers usinghigh-strength 7000-series zinc-magnesiumaluminum alloy will double in 2025 from 2015in North America, while usage of 6000 seriesaluminum is expected to grow at a slowerpace, Shinya Takaku, a spokesman for KobeSteel told S&P Global Platts Tuesday.Takaku said, in 2015, steel was themainstream raw material for bumpers, andamong aluminum grades, usage of6000-series silicon-magnesium aluminumalloy was double that of 7000-series zincmagnesiumalloys. In 2015, only 7% of carsproduced in North America were mountedwith 7000-series aluminum bumpers,14%had bumpers made of 6000-series siliconmagnesiumaluminum alloy and theremaining 79% had bumpers made of steel.
