Peru’s May copper, zinc, lead, tin output plunges on lockdown

Peru’s production of copper, zinc, lead, tin and precious metals all dropped sharply in May as mining operations were shuttered by a nationwide coronavirus lockdown, the Energy & Mines Ministry said July 7. Copper output fell 41.2% to 128,407 mt from 218,219 mt a year ago, the ministry said in a statement. Operations including Freeport’s Cerro Verde, China Minmetals’ Las Bambas, Chinalco’s Toromocho and Hudbay Minerals’ Constancia began restarting operations after they were halted for two months a government-decreed quarantine.
