Copper giant Codelco delays desalination plant, cancels contract

Santiago—Chile’s Codelco has delayed plans to build a giant desalination plant to supply water to its mines in northern Chile as the world’s largest copper producer strives to boost productivity at its operations. In a statement Friday, Codelco said that it had cancelled a $1-billion contract awarded just last month to Japan’s Marubeni Corp and partners to build and operate the plant and pumping system.
