Diverse defence responses were studied in transgenicPusa Basmatil (PB1) rice lines engineered with ricechitinase gene (chill) for resistance against the sheathblight pathogen, Rhizoctonia solani. Enhancement ofphenylalanine ammonia lyase, peroxidase, and poly-phenoloxidase enzyme activities in response to thepathogen challenge under controlled conditions re-sulted in reduced symptom development and contain-ment of disease in transgenic rice lines compared tonon-transgenic control plants. Loss of chlorophyll re-sulting from R. solani infection was comparatively lessin transgenic plants. Our results provide new informa-tion on the biochemical basis of chitinase-based fungalresistance in transgenic plants.
