NIWA's Environmental Information Group is continuing to implement changes to the structure of NIWA hydrological networks and monitoring activities, to better align with recommendations of the National Objectives Framework (NOF), the requirements of environmental monitoring and reporting guidelines and protocols (eMAR) and the development of National Environmental Standards (NEMS). A component of planned changes has been to shift focus from the operation of multiple stations nationally towards the development of a smaller series of "Benchmark" stations that, as well as maintaining a national overview, can be used to demonstrate best industry practice and to evaluate the development and introduction of new monitoring technologies and techniques.
