Highlights?The molecule orbital energies of triacylglycerol molecules with different degree of unsaturation are calculated and the compositions of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) are analyzed.?The ionization potentials (IPs) of triacylglycerol molecules are calculated and the IP distribution characters of vegetable insulating oils are obtained.?The electron affinities (EAs) of triacylglycerol molecules are calculated and the chemical trap and total trap are estimated in vegetable insulating oils.?The effects of the IP distribution character and shallow trap feature on streamer inception and propagation are discussed.AbstractVegetable oils, mainly composed of triacylglycerol molecules, have been widely studied as new insulation materials in the recent years.
