Meridian Energy's proposal to open up Lake Pukaki for hydro generation appears to have broad support. Last year, Meridian announced its intention to build a new 35-megawatt hydro electricity power station at the Pukaki canal intake structure, near State Highway 8 in the Mackenzie district. The company lodged consents with Environment Canterbury and the Mackenzie District Council earlier this year.
