Bayer MaterialScience Commissions Eco-Friendly German Chlorine Unit

Leverkusen— Bayer MaterialScience said it has started up a new 20,000-t/y "climate-friendly" chlorine demonstration plant at its Chempark Krefeld-Uerdingen site in Germany (PCN, 5 Apr 2010, p 3). Last year, the company signed a contract with Uhde for construction of the plant. "The oxygen-depolarized cathode used for this has been incorporated into the new single-element technology from Uhde/UhdeNora," explained Bayer. With the introduction of this new industrial manufacturing process, the two companies are hoping to significantly reduce energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions.
