Canada Commits $49-Mn to Inter Pipeline For Its Heartland Petrochem Complex

Alberta-The government of Canada,through its Strategic Innovation Fund,has committed $49-million to Inter Pipeline for its Heartland Petrochemical Complex being built in Strath-cona County,Alberta,Canada(PCN,30 Apr 2018,p 1).The approximately $3.5-billion project,located near the company's Redwater Olefinic Fractionator,includes a propane dehydrogenation unit designed to convert 22,000 b/d of propane into 525,000 t/y of polypropylene(PP)using W.R.Grace & Co.'s Unipol PP process technology.Completion is expected in late 2021.Inter Pipeline's process of converting the propane into PP is estimated to displace 1.75-million t/y of carbon dioxide,the government noted.The project will also open new markets and opportunities,as PP is not currently produced in Canada.
