Synthesis of 3-Substituted 1-Thioacyl- and l-Tfaiocarbamoylindoles from alpha-Substituted 2-Isocyanato-beta-methoxystyrenes

3-Aryl-l-thioacylindoles were prepared by treating a-aryl-2-isothiocyanato-P-methoxystyrenes with organolithiums or Grignard reagents, followed by hydriodic acid catalyzed cyclization of the resulting adducts. A one-pot synthesis of 1-thiocarbamoylin-doles was achieved by hydriodic acid mediated cyclization of the corresponding thiourea intermediates, prepared from a-substituted 2-isothiocyanato-(3-methoxystyrenes and secondary amines.
