The personal care industry is seeking natural, and effective preservative systems. However the definition of natural is unclear and not quite regulated. It raises concerns such as safety, efficacy, compatibility, cost, solubility or availability. Natural-Like solutions may be a key to filling the gaps of the preservation industry, building a bridge between chemical and natural. Maltol was identified as a key ingredient in this concept, strengthened by the role of cationic catalysis.
