China gives non-animal testing the green light

CHINA The Chinese government has given the green light to nine alternative methods for animal testing,according to a statement issued by the Institute for In Vitro Sciences(IIVS).Two of the nine methods will be the Direct Peptide Reaction Assay(DPRA)for skin sensitisation and the Short Time Exposure Assay(STE)for eye irritation.This decision follows a number of initiatives lobbying for China's government to end mandatory animal testing for cosmetics.These included The Leaping Bunny Pilot Project launched by Cruelty Free International and Forever Against Animal Testing alongside The Body Shop.Meanwhile,China's National Medical Products Administration(NMPA)and its subordinate body,the National Institutes for Food and Drug Control(NIFDC),have been modernising their approach,but require the technical infrastructure for alternative testing.
