Vale invests in pellet feed project as iron ore pellet demand soars

Vale’s directors have approved a$428 million investment in a reprocessingproject to supply high-grade iron orefines to its restarted Sao Luis pellet plant,as demand for iron ore pellets outstripsavailable supplies, the Brazilian miner said ina 3Q results webcast Thursday.The Gelado project, based on ore fromCarajas in Vale’s northern system, involvesrecovery of around 10 million mt/year of ironore fines from the Gelado tailings dam up to2031. It will feed the nearby Sao Luis pelletplant in Maranhao, northeast Brazil, which has a production capacity of around 7.5million mt/year of pellets.
