Rio Tinto exits coking coal with sale of Kestrel mine

Miner Rio Tinto said Tuesday it hasagreed to sell its Kestrel coking coal mine for$2.25 billion to a consortium of private equitycompanies, formed by EMR Capital (EMR) andPT Adaro Energy Tbk.With the deal, Rio is selling its last remainingAustralian coking coal asset, using the proceedsfor general corporate purposes as it shifts intoinvestments in metals and minerals for batteriesand new economy applications.
