Vale's first quarter nickel output down 17.9% year on year

Vale produced 58,600 mt of finishednickel in the first quarter of 2018, down 17.9%from Q1 2017, the Brazilian miner said Monday.The drop mainly reflected "Vale's rigorouscapital allocation process based on returns, thatresulted in decreased Voisey's Bay productionoutput to extend its mine life while the Voisey'sBay Mine Extension project is reassessed, as wellas Vale's decision to adjust its nickel supply byplacing non-competitive mines, such as Stobie inSudbury and Birchtree in Manitoba, on care andmaintenance," the company said in a statement.
