European company sees room to invest further in US met coal expansion

Charlottesville, Virginia—Liechtenstein-based Sev.en Energy AG recently picked up investments in several US metallurgical coal assets and is shopping for more, even as most investors eschew the sector. In the past few weeks, Sev.en served as a backup bidder in a bankruptcy auction for met coal mines in Alabama, secured a major interest in Pennsylvania-based miner Corsa Coal, and most recently acquired Central Appalachia met coal producer Blackhawk Mining. Though he declined to comment on specific transactions, Sev.en Executive Director Alan Svoboda told S&P Global Market Intelligence in an email that the company is looking at further acquisition and growth opportunities in the met coal sector in the US and Australia.
