London—The new majority owner of the Elga coal mine has an ambitious plan to turn it into Russia’s largest coking coal producer, with targeted output of 30 million mt/year by 2025 putting it ahead of current leader Evraz’s 25 million mt/year output, but the pace of development could be impacted by market conditions. Russian investment group A-Property, which last month bought a 51% stake in the Elga mine in the Sakha Republic, East Siberia, from mining and steel company Mechel, told S&P Global Platts Thursday it plans to ramp up mining at the open-pit mine to 1 million mt/month towards the end of 2020, with 7 million mt of raw coal delivered this year and 12 million mt in 2021.
