China port tightens met coal import rules

Singapore—China’s Tangshan steelmaking hub saw tightened import controls on coal imports starting last week, potentially impacting seaborne imports, market sources told S&P Global Platts Monday. A monthly port quota of 450,000 mt has been introduced at Caofeidian, one of the major ports located in Tangshan, with only end-users being allowed to perform custom declarations, the sources added. Sources at two major Chinese steelmakers confirmed to Platts that they had received verbal notice from Caofeidian port authorities that regulations were being imposed on monthly imports.
