Taiwan’s July ferrous scrap imports down 0.6% on month

Singapore—Taiwan imported 348,061 mt of ferrous scrap in July, down 0.6% from June’s 350,228 mt and 6.9% lower year on year, preliminary custom figures showed Aug 10. The US moved back into its usual top spot as an origin in July, after losing out to Japanese volumes in June. July’s US volume tallied at 153,280 mt, up 11% month on month, which was followed by Japan at 101,846 mt, down 32%. Exports from Australia came in third at 27,634 mt, up 81%. The plunge in Japanese volumes received in July was partly attributed to the heightened prices seen during the period from late May into early June, driven by tightening collection, which saw less buying interest from Taiwanese mills.
